Getting Started

A photograph of people gathered around a vat, hand-dying fabrics.

It’s not easy to setup an online shop in a hurry — it’s an ongoing process that can require skills that I haven’t yet learned. So I must depend on others for their expertise and help.

There are plenty of tasks I must teach myself about hand dyeing even before I put the first skein of yarn into the dye bath. There is a definite process to doing it that I must learn and write out to remind myself of the myriad of steps required to successfully dye of skein of yarn.

Supplies mean a financial outlay — and even though its nowhere near what other businesses’ invest to purchase supplies, it can be pricey and take time to gather everything needed to even begin.

It’s taken me close to a year to collect all the pans, dyes, yarns, etc. that I need to be able to begin. Then there is the matter of space — where will the actual yarn dyeing take place? For me, I converted an all year round porch as my dyeing studio. I call it “The Snug Studio” because it’s small and cozy.

Recently, I spent a month redesigning, painting and organizing this space to not only be functional but have the needed space to do the actual dyeing process. It has to start somewhere, and this is the my new beginning.

xoxo, Lorrie
